George Mertz, MS

George is an engineer with Go Sustainable Energy. He has received his Bachelor’s (Magna Cum Laude) and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dayton (UD). George has extensive experience in commercial and industrial energy efficiency. In addition to serving several years in the Industrial Assessment Center program at the UD, he also co-founded the university’s Building Energy Center (BEC). At the BEC, George trained and led teams of graduate engineers on commercial building energy assessments. Currently, he assists energy assessments and is also the main engineer on national benchmarking efforts for Go Sustainable Energy.

George’s energy efficiency efforts have often led beyond typical energy assessments into the design field, and he has researched designing conservation programs, net-zero energy homes and appropriate technology. His organizational design efforts led not only to the creation of the BEC, but also to an energy conservation program among UD’s dormitories. He was a major contributor to the design of the UD Eco-House, which is slated for construction. George also has spent considerable time abroad, learning cultural strengths and building partnerships to bring technical expertise in the form of appropriate technology to developing countries through the UD ETHOS program.

George’s passion for sustainability is strong, and he grows and raises much of his own local, organic food.
