RUF Briquetting Systems - Solar Feasibility & Procurement Support

The Need
In 2025, RUF (pronounced "roof") Briquetting Systems built their first US manufacturing facility in North Ridgeville, OH. In keeping with the company's strong commitment to sustainability, RUF began exploring solar at this site to offset energy costs and emissions.
Our Approach
Go was tasked with a feasibility study and support of market engagement and vendor selection. First, we met RUF stakeholders to discuss project goals and constraints. Next, we explored regulatory, physical, and economic factors that would impact the solar system sizing. The regulatory limit is critical to understand, but is more challenging to determine for a new facility such as this one with no historic electricity data. Luckily, RUF has other existing facilities, such as their site in Zaisertshofen, Germany. We used energy, production, and weather data from Zaisertshofen to create a statistical model for the North Ridgeville site to estimate the regulatory limitations! Combining our regulatory findings with the site's physical and electrical details allowed us to analyze multiple viable system sizes to determine the most economical solar system sizes.
Our findings helped RUF make the decision to engage the market, requesting project pricing as well as vendor qualifications and availability. Go assisted through this process in drafting a request for proposals, reviewing vendor responses, updating project economics per actual pricing, and supporting vendor interviews.

The Results
RUF selected a qualified vendor to construct a solar system of around 330 kW, with expected completion in summer of 2026. RUF plans to expand their operations and facility footprint in the years ahead and plans to consider additional solar and/or battery storage when they do.
